Long Live, Jimothy (Please Don't Ruin This)
It wouldn't be right if I didn't squeeze something into this blog about Jimothy. As long as this record of my thoughts lingers in cyberspace, I'm going to use it as written history of my travels in Seattle — the way the Pharaohs used hieroglyphics to immortalize themselves, we might as well remember an inspirational one-hit-wonder trash panda.
He got a promotional night dedicated to him from the Mariners, has apparently been immortalized as a bobblehead, and seems to have inspired some art from the mural artist "Henry."
I'm glad he's disappearing from our collective psyche. The viral phenomenon of Jimothy was inspiring — he had what seemed to be a disability but turned it into a strength, at least regarding mobility.
Still, I was wary of what could happen if Jimothy wore out his welcome on social media. I'd imagine it would only be a matter of time before, if he didn't disappear, online abuse worked itself into the narrative. Barney and Elmo, who only seemed to promote the concept of unconditional love, found their haters pretty quickly. But respectively, they're a gentle anthropomorphic Tyrannosaurus and a kind Monster — you can't actually harm them. Jimothy is a living, breathing raccoon. For his own good, I'm glad Jimothy is going to fade away. I wish nothing but the best for him. May he feast on many unsecured trash cans in peace.
